Connection to MTSD: I am a Homestead High School Alumni, graduate of UW Milwaukee with a BS In History, and a resident of Mequon since 1968. I am concerned with the direction that the Mequon-Thiensville School District (MTSD) has taken in more recent years. Currently, my wife and I have a 6th grade daughter attending Lakeshore Middle School, and my family has witnessed first-hand the decline in the educational experience. I care about our community and our schools, and I want to be part of the positive change that needs to happen to restore the school district.
What Restore MTSD Means to Me: Much of the learning used to take place in the school system, whereas now many families spend nights searching for free online YouTube videos to help their children with math lessons, or those that can afford it have turned to professional tutoring services, or if they can decipher the math themselves the parent becomes the tutor. At a school board meeting on August 2, 2021, it was reported that only 56% of students in grades 3-8 are math proficient, which means we are failing 44% of these students. I believe it is past time to review the curriculum and determine if the students and teachers are receiving the support they need in the classroom. In addition, we need to return to valuing people over buildings, and work within the budget and plan more prudently around maintenance and improvements as opposed to relying on referendums. Also, as a small business owner working in the remodeling and maintenance business, good communication and responding to inquiries in a timely manner is key to the success of my business. We need to restore communication in the school district, with board members responding directly to parent concerns, and with reinstating committees that include parents, teachers, administrators, and community members working together. I want to hear directly from the teachers as to how we can better support them. Along with the RESTORE MTSD platform, these are a few of the specific matters that speak loudly to me.
Why I am running: I want to return the voice of the parents and taxpayers to the Board of Education. We need to restore thoughtful exchange to the school board, and not just be a rubber stamp for decisions made by the superintendent. With more accountability, more transparency, better communication, and stronger leadership overall, we can win back the education our children deserve!
