Restore MTSD / Candidates / Cheryle Rebholz
Connection to MTSD: My husband and I, along with our twin sons and youngest, moved to Mequon from Milwaukee for the school year of 1990/1991 for low taxes, low crime and a reputation of strong schools. MTSD especially had a strong Special Education program which we needed since one of our twin sons was a candidate for Special Education.
I was a very active school parent volunteer K-12 in the district. The district was one big family with all kinds of successes. We all knew our bus driver's name (Linda), the teachers in the buildings and the school principals. We all had oars in the water and the culture was positive!
What Restore MTSD Means to Me: The MTSD district has been riding on its former past academic achievements. I receive, like all of you, the Annual School District Report and I highlight every year the Reading and Math scores Grades 3-8, and since 2015 to year-to-date found that the percentage of students at or above proficiency on state tests are in decline in our district, a pattern.
I did serve as your former Board of Education Member from 2012-2015. After one term I was frustrated that I was in the minority on most of the vote outcomes and could not advance a different point of view which then underserved certain cohorts. I would on average spend 30 hours a week pouring over the district expense reports, policies, and perform personal research on initiatives brought forward to the board. I put my strong work ethic to use to help in the task of management oversight.
Current events have awakened the school families and all stakeholders. Restore means to me to make sure all school children have a well-rounded education and exposure in high school to the 3 pathways of 1-Liberal Arts, 2- Technical Education and 3- the Military pathway. I would be remiss if I didn’t include entrepreneurship too. The district as a whole needs to accomplish that ALL our students are prepared for the "Real World" and a "GAP" year.
Restore all policies that will let ALL stakeholders talk and communicate to their Board of Education members without barriers and look at other policies that need to be reformed or repealed. Introduce stakeholders to Standing Committees, Budget Committee, Curriculum Committee, and Buildings and Grounds.
Along with my fellow running mates, we will help change the negative policies from the incumbents who had the wrong vision for the district. The time has come for change. Our children have lost precious time in learning that cannot be replaced.
Background / Experience: Attended MATC and studied Business Administration & Fashion Merchandising. I have formal experience with school board governance and know what works. I am a two time entrepreneur with a 41 year business and the other is celebrating its 3rd year in business. I am a member of Lumen Christi Catholic Church & Choir. My work ethic has sustained my business successes and growth, along with outstanding reputation, all of which I will bring to the school board.
